It’s just like when it was discovered that Ultra Wormhole radiation had affected Passho berries and that all pokémon that consumed them were suddenly capable of using extremely powerful moves. Everyone in the entire region began planting Passho berries in their gardens and feeding them to their pokémon. Nobody questioned what the berries were really doing to make it so pokémon could use such moves.

Thoughts like those wander through Ceri’s mind while preparing the test tubes.

If the League really is as good as they claim, if they really are as morally righteous, shouldn’t they hesitate more before feeding their pokémon fruits and draughts that alter them to a genetic level?

It’s laughable.

She hasn’t published her findings because of Rocket secrecy, but also because of the fact that she knows there’s people out there who would hypocritically think of experiments like this one as immoral.

Ceri sighs, looking at the time on her phone before returning her attention to the two test tubes. One contains the Philter of Luminescence, and the other contains a similar liquid. The colour isn’t quite the same. The formula isn’t a perfect replica just yet.

Now all she needs is for Bee to arrive with one of their test subjects to see if they both do the same.

The Illumina phenomenon. It was an incredible thing. Even more incredible was the potential to artificially replicate it.

To purposefully alter a Pokémon on a genetic level wasn't something that truly bothered Barnaby. Pokémon were tools, first and foremost, before anything else. And tools needed to be honed. It was why he'd made his way yet again to ROCKET's Sootopolis laboratory, why he was even offering one of his own VULPIX for experimentation today.

To contribute to ROCKET's growing knowledge. To add to their arsenal. To bolster their power against the perpetual conflict with the League.

Barnaby's other reason, though? Besides an Illumina's unique capabilities in battle against certain Pokémon...

Novelty. Vanity. Another beautiful fox to add to his precious collection.

Morality was a skewed concept in BARNABY FINCH's mind. As he entered the lab and approached Ceri Glynn with a VULPIX in his arms, he felt neither guilt nor shame in offering the innocent Pokémon to her.

"Time to put your synthesized philter to the test!"

”Wow, not even a ‘Hi’?” The researcher chides Bee when he makes her into the lab, tutting. She’s joking, of course, as is made obvious by the way she laughs only a few seconds later.

Out of all pokémon, they’ll be working with Vulpix today, which definitely isn’t what Ceri would prefer. Still, it’s inevitable: it’s a simple species with a clear evolution line that shouldn’t display anything unexpected when converted into an Illumina pokémon. She had prepared for this, having taken her strongest allergy medication and even donning on a face mask.

”Your Vulpix will be given the regular philter. This one, though…” From a simple pokéball like any other, a second Vulpix is released, also Kantonian and of similar weight and height when compared to Bee’s. ”This one will be given our synthesised version of it.”

She’s certain they copied the formula as closely as possible, but there’s the possibility a few ingredients might be different and that the change could have catastrophic effects…

Admittedly, the prospect of failure bothers her more than whatever may happen to the pokémon.

With a Cheshire grin, Barnaby set his own VULPIX on the examination table while shaking his head at Ceri Glynn.

"My apologies for the grave offense," He replied, his words dripping with sarcasm. "I'm just excited to see what happens today."

Barnaby stepped back, allowing both foxes to come into view. They were almost identical in every way, down to their cinnamon coat and adorable swirling hair tuft. If luck was on their side, there would be two Illumina Pokémon added to ROCKET's roster in just a few minutes.

"I'm ready when you are." Barnaby added in a more serious tone, nodding toward the VULPIX. "I am curious though... what exactly went into your version of the concoction?"

Bee asks her about the specifics of her version of the Philter of Luminescence, but while Ceri had found the process of replicating it to be terribly exciting (and sometimes mildly frustrating) and while she could go on and on about every step, they don’t have the time to have their work derailed by discussions of such nature.

That being the case, she reaches for her tablet, tapping the screen a few times before handing it to the executive with a triumphant grin.

”All details on the formula are right there if you wanna have a look. There’s certain components of the original philter we haven’t managed to identify just yet. So… We’ll see how this goes!”

This time, since she’s dealing with two subjects and not one, she opts for placing the concoctions in petri dishes that are then placed before both vulpine pokémon.

He frowned, though it was very slight. Although he wouldn't admit it to just anyone, a lot of the technical jargon behind the science was lost on someone like BARNABY FINCH. In truth, quite often he relied on the professionals to relay it to him in simpler terms. So, when Ceri casually handed him her tablet with all of the pertinent information on her synthesized philter, Barnaby appraised it, gave it the good ol' college try...

... and then immediately became frustrated by his lack of understanding. He spoke several languages, but had never seen most of these words in any of their lexicons.

Luckily he didn't have time to dwell on his confusion. Ceri was offering the philters, both original and synthesized, to the pair of VULPIX. Barnaby lowered his arms so that the tablet hung loosely at his side; his full attention was on their experiment now.

It takes a moment and some smart coercion, but soon enough the Vulpix are drinking. Last time, when Ceri had given the philter to her Ivysaur, the transformation had begun immediately, as if the effects were instantaneous.

Cameras record even the slightest detail when Bee’s Vulpix begins to change as has been expected, but the researcher’s attention is mostly on its unnamed counterpart.

It too begins to change, although perhaps more subtly. There’s the first hints of an illumina pattern, its coloration growing lighter, yet the pokémon itself doesn’t look pleased at all. It soon starts to cry and whimper…

”Hmm… That’s not good…”
[break][break]
She doesn’t intervene; allowing the process to continue even when the pokémon is clearly suffering.

With renewed awe he watched as his own Pokémon underwent the same transformation as Ceri Glynn's IVYSAUR. Glowing patterns began to sprout across her fur, which itself turned from a smoky cinnamon to a pale peach color. It was a stunning transformation - everything Barnaby had hoped for! She would look gorgeous next to his other foxes. Another trophy in his collection.

The other VULPIX, however... her change was less than beautiful. In fact, the thing looked pained; she began to shake and pitiful whines spilled from her panting, drooling mouth.

"Oh... hm." Barnaby's eyebrows furrowed.

"That definitely didn't happen before." He observed, his voice seeming less worried and more morbidly curious about the deviation.

He was just glad it wasn't his own VULPIX suffering on the table.

It’s at this point that Ceri faces what some may consider a dilemma. The experiment had been a failure, the subject is suffering, and thus it only makes sense to put it down and schedule a necropsy to find out exactly what happened. Some would say it’s the right thing to do. Ceri, however, wonders what other effects the synthesised philter might have.

If the Vulpix is able to push past the pain, will its metamorphosis be completed?

Unlike Bee, she does not suffer from morbid curiosity. It’s her desire to understand that pushes her forward; her desire to achieve something incredible right here in this lab. She’s getting so close. She can feel it. She can see the signs of the Illumina Phenomenon showing themselves all over the body of the Vulpix…

The more vivid the pattern becomes, the louder its cries, yet they fall on deaf ears.
[break][break]
It convulses violently, looking up at BARNABY FINCH with wide eyes while foam-like drool falls onto the steel table.
[break][break]
Ceri watches through it all, only remembering Bee is there with her when looking away to check the pokémon’s vitals on the nearby equipment.
[break][break]
”Oh… You can go if you want. I doubt it’ll make it. There must have been something among the unidentified components that stabilised the formula… Still not sure what, though. I’ll need to go back to the drawing board.”

Still, even if failure, much can be learned.

As the fox lay dying, Barnaby looked down on the creature with a detached, unfeeling stare. This was not his VULPIX, after all. And even if it was, only a few of his Pokémon had earned any emotional investment from BARNABY FINCH. To him, the test subject before him was simply a means to an end.

And an end it certainly was. The thing was barely breathing by the time Ceri Glynn suggested his departure. Barnaby nodded mutely before retrieving his own transformed Pokémon, who looked startled by the other VULPIX's condition but otherwise complied with being picked up.

"Keep up the good work. I have faith you'll figure out the formula soon."

Barnaby's encouragement came over his shoulder as he made to leave the laboratory.

"Text me if you ever need anymore Pokémon for your experiments."
